Lithotripsy

The scientific name for this procedure is Electrocorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL). It involves the use of high-intensity sound waves to shatter kidney stones into smaller fragments that can be passed out of the body in the urine. By using sound waves there is minimal effects on the surrounding internal tissues. An ultrasound machine or an image intensifier is used to locate the stone and guide the area to be targeted.
